Who Is Joey Thomas?
Joseph “Joey” Thomas is a father of three girls, a licensed barber, a mentor, a entrepreneur and wholeheartedly gives & loves the Third District where he grew up and still resides.
Joey’s inspiration to run for city council in the Third District was sparked by the future he wants to see for his three daughters, Joye, Abigail, and Bailey. In 2007, Joey started his first business, Joey Cuts Barber Salon, at 39th and Indiana. He hired young barbers from the community and grew his brand in the heart of the Third District. Later, he expanded the business to the 18th and Vine District in the historic Lincoln Building. He named that Business 18OV Barber Salon and hired more barbers than the previous location could accommodate.
Joey had a vision to create positive change in the community, so he started the Know Joey? Foundation in 2007. The foundation raises money to provide food for the homeless during the week of Thanksgiving. Over 10,000 families have been touched by this annual November event. A year later, Joey’s giving spirit sparked a new outreach for the Know Joey? Foundation when he started the Fresh Cut Fresh Start (FCFS) project. Barbers from around the metro area give free haircuts to kids, along with new backpacks, school supplies, shoes, uniforms, health-related education, and scholarships. Over 5,000 kids have participated in the Fresh Cut, Fresh Start event. The Know Joey? Foundation continues to thrive and have a positive impact on young people in the Third District and beyond.
Joey has won numerous small business and community service awards in his career.
